The United Nations told the Pakistani and Indian governments to stay calm after the deadly Kashmir attack.

UN calls for calm amid escalating tensions:

The UN analyzed the current situation and the escalating tension between Pakistan and India. The UN has urged both countries to stay calm and avoid further deterioration. The UN spokesperson Stephane Dujjaric stated, “The secretary-general is following the situation very closely and with great concern.”

UN appeals for peaceful resolution:

The UN spokesperson said that India and Pakistan should try to overcome the already tense situation. He also said that their dispute can only be resolved through mutual engagement. He said, “We appeal for maximum restraint and for both countries to refrain from steps that could increase tensions in an already volatile region.” The UN spokesperson also confirmed that Secretary-General Guterres has not directly communicated with either country’s leadership yet.

Cross-Border firing along the Line of Control:

As per the reports, there is an exchange of fire along the Lines of control between Pakistani and Indian military. One of the government officials stated, “There was no firing on civilian populations.” The statement confirmed that the fire exchange happened at midnight between the armed forces.

US monitoring the situation:

The United States is keenly monitoring the situation. It declared the current situation as “rapidly changing” and confirmed Washington was closely monitoring developments. The US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said, “We are not taking a position on the status of Kashmir or Jammu at this time.” He cautioned while giving a direct response to the suspension of the Indian-Water treaty.

Trade suspension and airspace closure:

Pakistan gave a strong response to the Indian actions. In an NSC meeting led by Shahbaz Sharif, Pakistan announced the suspension of trade with India, closure of Pakistani airspace for Indian flights and shutting down the Wagah border crossing. 

Strong words from Pakistan’s leadership:

Pakistan condemned the Pahalgam attack but called out India’s response as “unilateral, unjust, politically motivated, and devoid of legal merit.” The PMO said that India has crossed diplomatic boundaries. In a statement by PMO, “Pakistan will exercise its right to hold all bilateral agreements with India in abeyance until India desists from its continued violation of international law.”

Indus Waters Treaty suspension:

Analysts predicted that the suspension of the Indus water treaty may ignite the fuel between both nations. In a recent move, India has suspended the treaty. It leads to more complexity in the already tense environment.

Diplomatic efforts needed to prevent escalation:

There is a need for a dialogue between India and Pakistan to prevent further escalation. International bodies are putting pressure on both sides. The UN and the US are calling out both nations for meaningful diplomatic talks.
