No to Canals:
While briefing the media, PPP leaders confirmed their strong stance, saying, “No to Canals.” He explained that the party has always raised its concerns in meetings and written communications. Mr. Memon emphasised that Sindh cannot support any canal construction while it struggles with severe water shortages. He stated, “In every forum, including IRSA and CCI, we’ve opposed this project. Our position has not changed.” Mr. Memon also talked about the water availability certificate that was issued to Punjab in 2024. He claimed that they formally rejected the project and submitted a formal summary in June 2025.
Sindh raises objections:
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has submitted written requests in which he stressed that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) must convene every 90 days. Mr. Memon said, “We’ve sent several letters asking for a CCI meeting, but there’s been no response. We have documented proof of our opposition.” Memon also mentioned that despite diverting Sindh’s river water, Punjab should use its reserved groundwater.
Federal government reaches out for dialogue:
Rana Sanaullah contacted Sharjeel Memon, Rashid Soomro, Ayaz Latif Palijo, and Syed Zain Shah. He extended formal invitations for talks and promised that the Prime Minister was serious about addressing concerns through peaceful consultation.
JUI-F demands halt before talks begin:
PPP and the JUI-F demanded a halt in the canal project before talks with the government. In a statement, the JUI-F demanded that Sindhi nationalist parties, legal experts, and representatives of farmers also be included in the talks. The party said, “Until construction is stopped, we see no point in sitting down for discussions.”
SUP seeks broader consultation
Rana Sanaullah asked the PPP and the JUI-F leaders to start talks on the canal issue. The Sindh United Party (SUP) showed caution in response to Rana Sanaullah’s outreach. According to the SUP, Rana Sanaullah conveyed that Shehbaz Sharif was personally interested in meeting Zain Shah. However, SUP emphasised that a collective decision involving all concerned parties is necessary before moving forward.
