A longstanding and strategic partnership:

Iran and China have always had a good relationship. Both countries always stood for each other and shared a strong diplomatic history. Their partnership is longstanding. Guo emphasised that both countries maintain respect and support for one another. He added that their continued cooperation helps promote peace and stability across the region and beyond.

Economic ties:

The US sanctions on Iranian trade worsen the economy of Iran. In this crucial time, China becomes the hope of light for Iran. It became its trading partner for oil. However, Iran sold oil to China at reduced prices. Thus, it created a strong bond between China and Iran. In 2021, Iran and China signed a long-term strategic agreement set to last 25 years. This deal covers cooperation in energy, infrastructure, security, telecommunications, and more.

Nuclear talks and Global tensions:

The US and Iran were in talks of reviving their nuclear deals. In 2015, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed by Iran, China, the US, Russia, France, Britain, Germany, and the European Union. As per this plan, Iran has to limit its nuclear program to get rid of the US sanctions.

In 2018, Trump alleged Iran of not fulfilling its commitments. Due to this, the US pulled out of the agreement. At first, Iran denied Trump’s allegations, but their continued allegations forced him to step back from their commitments. Now that Trump is again in power, both countries have restarted their nuclear talks. However, the continued threat by Trump exacerbates global tension.

China’s role:

Since 2015, China has always asked for peace between Iran and other countries. Its warm welcome of Iran’s Foreign Minister shows its involvement in peaceful nuclear talks with the US.
