Punjab Police Passed A Summary For New “Riot Management Police (RMP)”
Punjab Police passed a summary to make a new Riot Management Police (RMP) to tackle riots that cause damage to public property.
People take advantage of a peaceful protest to dishonor their country’s pride. Due to this, the public suffers a lot. One of those peaceful protests that turned into a riot in the history of Pakistan was the May 9 incident. The May 9 incident was no less than a horrible nightmare.
That incident damaged massive public and private property and badly impacted Pakistan’s image in the broader world. In a briefing given to the media, the officials stated that there is a need to make RMP manage riots like those of May 9. Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) DIG Athar Waheed proposed a 30-page draft for RMP.
It was told that RMP was made in accordance with the Right to Peaceful Protest Act 2024. Moreover, it was decided that the headquarters for the RMP would be in Lahore, and the RMP would be led by a police officer having DIG or above rank. There were 8 regional offices for RMP. The superintendent of police will head each regional office.

DIG Athar Waheed said that RMP would be the only force that has the authority to punish the culprits involved in damaging the property of the country. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Usman Anwar, briefed Punjab Chief Minister Mariyam Nawaz about this project. He informed the CM about the significance of force in maintaining the peace of the country.
Moreover, he said that unharmful tools like tear gas, rubber bullets, and sound cannons could be used to disperse the crowd aimed at dismantling the peaceful protest. It is also written in the document that Riot Management Police will have trained dogs along with them. These dogs will act as facilitators in reducing ruffles and managing the crowds.
In the proposed Riots Management Police draft, it is mentioned that bulletproof vehicles are needed for additional IG and DIG RMP. Moreover, other specialized vehicles are needed to tackle riots. To conclude, the officials said that RMP is mandatory to manage protests as most of the peaceful protests turn into riots that cause damage to public and private properties, injuries and loss of lives of innocent people.
