On Monday 17th of March 2025, according to reports the Pakistani government decided to stop the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) from registering new medical and dental institutions.

According to sources, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has made the decision to stop registering new medical and dental programs in accordance with government directives.

This decision has been formally authorized by the PMDC, and registration applications received after the 5th of January will not be taken into consideration. However, according to the sources, (13) applications that were submitted before the 5th of January are still being reviewed.

The lack of professors at medical schools led to the decision to implement the restriction. The nation now has “66 public and 121 private” medical and dentistry institutions.

Private medical and dental colleges were allegedly stopped from collecting fees by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) last month.

Following the Senate Committee’s suggestion, the PMDC notified the institutions to refrain from collecting fees. The cancellation of fee collection was recommended by the Senate’s Health Subcommittee.

Fee collection was suspended pending the submission of the Medical Education Committee’s recommendations. To examine the issue, the Prime Minister established this committee, which is led by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. Whereas the group that analyzes the requirements and problems that private medical educational institutions face. According to the sources, private medical schools have received around “Rs 15 million” in fees over the previous (5) years.
