Growing concerns among muslim students:
Many Muslim students in the US fear the deportation policies of Trump’s administration. Trump ordered to deportation of those students involved in Pro-Palestinian protests. In order to act upon Trump’s orders, the government has increased the efforts to deport students involved in such protests. Thus, the students are looking towards the US judicial system, and their hopes are strengthened when the court orders to halt the deportation of the Pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil.

Court halts Khalil’s deportation:
A U.S. District Judge, Jesse M. Furman, stopped Khalil’s removal from the country until a court hearing. The judge ruled that Khalil must remain in the U.S. until further legal proceedings determine his case. Khalil, a green card holder, was arrested as part of a federal crackdown on foreign nationals participating in Palestine-related protests. His detention has sparked widespread concern among student activists.
Fear and Uncertainty among students:
Many students are now hesitant to speak openly about their involvement in protests. Students expressed their worries in a small gathering at the Turkish Centre in Maryland. One of those students asked for help from the US court and said that students do not want to be deported. He, however, said that students are getting afraid. Another student emphasised their constitutional rights. He said that the freedom of speech is in the US constitution. That is why we want the court to address the matter seriously in accordance with the law beyond any bias.
Students and Faculty take action:
Teachers and students stood together against Trump’s malicious step of deportation of foreign nationals. They started protesting. Many students from Chicago University participated in the protest and particularly demanded the release of Khalil. An online petition demanding Khalil’s release gained 500,000 signatures. Supporters urged U.S. agencies and universities to intervene.
Government crackdown on activism:
After taking the oath, Trump has initiated new steps to prevent student activists from pursuing their agendas. A task force was formed to combat anti-Semitism, which has visited numerous universities to identify the activists. Moreover, Trump has also started an AI-fueled Catch and Revoke program. This program will help cancel the visas of foreign nationals involved in pro-Palestinian protests.
Trump openly supported these actions. He referred to Khalil as a “radical foreign pro-Hamas student” and warned of further deportations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also announced plans to revoke visas or green cards of individuals perceived to support Hamas. It could lead to an increase in deportations of foreign students.
