On Thursday, Shia Muslims carrying 200 vehicles were under an assault for 30 minutes from all sides. Passengers were traveling between Peshawar and Parachinar. The incident took place in the Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The death toll reached 43, including 16 individuals injured critically. The victims include men, women and children.

A leader from the Majlis-i-Wahdat-i-Muslimeen, Sajid Kazmi, accused law enforcement agencies of negligence and demanded a joint investigation team to look into the massacre. In the meantime, both authorities and the public are struggling to bring peace back, as a grand jirga is expected to tackle the uproar.

Protestors from all over the country, including Lahore and Karachi, flared up their rage across Kurram’s tragedy and demanded justice and peace. The human rights groups condemned the massacre and asked the federal and provincial governments to stop the cycle of violence.

One of the senior officials said they drafted a plan with nearly 90% consensus on key issues to spread peace in the region.  To cope with the insufficient and weak security situation of the region, officials decided to dismantle bunkers and de-weaponize the tribe from both sides. Despite these measures, the road connecting Parachinar to Thall and Hangu will be closed due to the threat of backfire in the tribe. The official emphasized that de-weaponization is mandatory for long-lasting peace in the region.

The KPK Apex committee decided to evacuate the region temporarily to save the lives of people. The committee drafted a strategy to sustain peace in the region. The committee gave a time frame of 1st Feb 2025 to the conflicted tribes to sustain peace in the environment.

An emergency air service with helicopters will be launched, and roads will be temporarily opened under strict security measures. Moreover, the committee decided to block social media accounts from spreading hatred against each other in the region. Meanwhile, the Apex committee stressed the unification of political parties over the Kurram conflict. The committee urged local cooperation to ensure long-lasting peace without politicizing the issue.
