Harvard University is the top US educational institute. The US government has been funding the university for so long. The government’s funds help the university in making authentic researchers in different fields. However, the university is facing a tough time by the government after its student’s involvement in protests supporting Gaza.
Harvard and Gaza Protest:
Israel has been doing genocidal attacks in Gaza since 2023. It is openly committing/ massacres in the region. The US is a strong supporter of Israel. In fact, it is providing aid to Israel in attacking Palestine. Globally, people are coming on the scene and making protests against Israel’s brutality.
In the US as well, a large number of people have come out of their houses and protested. The Harvard University student also appeared on the scene involved in protests against Israel. The students protested while Trump’s administration mistook the protest and considered it an attempt against Jews.
Trump, however, arrested many people involved in the protest and declared them anti-semite. Moreover, Trump’s administration declared that the protest was promoting extremism in the region against the Jews. That is why the new government, under the lead of Trump, arrested a large number of protestors and displaced them to another location.
Trump ban financial aid to Harvard:
Trump’s administration ordered Harvard to accept his new policies. The US government deduced a new policy for Harvard University. It asked the university’s administration to concede these policies; otherwise face economic loss. Trump has alleged Harvard’s involvement in spreading anti-semitism and provoking people towards extremism.
The US Education Department Secretary Linda McMahon wrote a letter to Harvard’s administration. In a letter, she said that the university should deal with anti-semitism within the university. Moreover, it should also reconsider its policies regarding racial differences among people. She also wrote that the university will no longer use government financial grants due to not fulfilling the government’s new policies.
Harvard’s response:
Upon receiving a letter from the Educational Secretary, Harvard University issued a statement in which it is clearly stated that the university will not blindly follow Trump’s policies. As per the university, these policies are meant to impose illegal control over the university. Moreover, the halt of the finances is also an attempt by the Trump administration to threaten the institution.
Trump’s strategies raised legal concerns over the matter and required the attention of the stakeholders on the matter. Harvard said that Trump’s tactics are a direct attack on the freedom of thought, speech and action in an academic career. Harvard stated that Trump’s actions should be meticulously observed. The fund’s blockage in the research area may be a serious threat to medicine as many people’s lives are at stake.
