After Australia lost to India in the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final, outstanding batsman Steve Smith confirmed his retirement from ODI cricket.

In the semi-final match played in Dubai, Steve Smith led his side to a (265 run) mark with a solid (73 runs), but Virat Kohli (84) helped India win.

Steve Smith described his ODI playing career as a “great ride” filled with “amazing times and wonderful memories.” One of the highlights of his career, he said, was winning “2” World Cups.

“I have enjoyed every second of this amazing journey. There have been countless incredible moments and wonderful recollections. Along with the many amazing teammates that shared the adventure, winning  2-World Cups was a terrific highlight”, Steve Smith continued.

Steve Smith Loved Test Cricket

“It looks like the ideal time to make way because there is an excellent chance for people to begin getting ready for the 2027 World Cup right now.”

According to Steve Smith, he is focusing on Test cricket. “I thoroughly look forward to the -World Test Championship Final-, the winter tour of the West Indies, and then playing England at home. Test cricket is still my top priority. On that stage, I think I will continue to have many things to offer.”

Australia’s (35-year-old) batsman has participated in (170) One-Day Internationals since the first match against the West Indies in 2010.

Before becoming one of Australia’s top hitters, Steve Smith started his career as an all-rounder.

Over a “(15-year) ODI career, he scored (5,800 runs) at an impressive average of (43.28) and a strike rate of (86.96)”. With “(12) hundreds and (35)half-centuries” overall, Steve Smith is Australia’s 12th-highest run scorer in ODIs. With his skillful fielding, he also secured 90) catches while picking up (28) wickets with the delivery of the ball.
