Senate Tensions Escalate As PTI Senator Raises Concerns Over Arrest & Missing Lawmaker

PTI senator Aon Abbas Buppi presented before the Senate. He gave details of his arrest while Ejaz Chaudhry remained absent. 

PTI senator appears before the senate:

On Saturday, PTI Senator Aon Abbas Buppi was presented before the Senate. However, fellow PTI Senator Ejaz Chaudhry was not brought despite the Senate chairman’s orders. On Friday, Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani directed authorities to ensure the presence of both senators in the session. However, only Senator Buppi was produced, while Ejaz Chaudhry remained absent.

Senator Buppi thanks the Senate chairman:

Senator Buppi thanked Chairman Gilani for his principled stance and appreciated the chairman’s commitment to fairness. He also stated that Gilani had refused to preside over the session if both senators were not present. Buppi also acknowledged Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar for his role in easing some of his challenges. He credited Tarar with taking a stand against the hardships and oppression he had experienced.

Buppi describes his arrest:

Senator Buppi shared details of his March 6 arrest. He recalled that a Senate session was scheduled for Thursday. However, he had prior commitments and requested that his agenda item be postponed to the next day. He said that the incident might not have happened if he had attended the session that day. 

According to Buppi, around 20 individuals arrived at his house early at 8:30 AM. He said that the individuals tied up all my houseworkers in one place. Buppi claimed a joint operation was conducted without naming any specific law enforcement agency. He said he was asleep in his bedroom with his wife when the intruders forcefully broke the door lock and entered the room.

PTI protests in the senate over arrest:

During Thursday’s Senate session, PTI lawmakers strongly protested Buppi’s arrest. Opposition Leader Syed Shibli Faraz raised concerns about how Buppi was taken from his Multan residence. He also alleged that the senator was manhandled during the arrest.

Senator Faraz argued that the police did not show a warrant before arresting Buppi and accused law enforcement of damaging property during the operation. The law minister admitted he had similar concerns about the arrest but maintained that the authorities followed legal procedures.

Ejaz Chaudhry’s absence raises concerns:

Senator Ejaz Chaudhry remained absent while Buppi was presented to the Senate. Chairman Gilani expressed his dissatisfaction over the authorities’ failure to present Chaudhry despite his explicit orders. On Friday, Gilani issued a production order for Chaudhry.
