Ukraine Open To Peace Talks And Economic Deal With The US

Trump confirmed Zelensky’s agreement to make a peace deal with Russia and an economic deal with the US.

Zelensky’s willingness to negotiate:

US President Donald Trump announced that the Ukrainian President had sent him a letter expressing thanks for US support. Zelenskyy also indicated Ukraine’s readiness to negotiate a peace deal with Russia. In addition, the Ukrainian leader signalled interest in signing a critical minerals agreement with the US. However, the deal could strengthen economic ties between the two nations and provide long-term benefits.

Trump reveals Zelensky’s message:

During his address to Congress, Trump read a portion of Zelenskyy’s letter. He emphasised Ukraine’s eagerness for peace and appreciation for past US assistance. Trump stated that Ukraine is ready for a peace deal with Russia. Moreover, nobody is more interested in making a peace deal than the Ukrainians. He also mentioned Ukraine’s willingness to sign the minerals deal.

Vance prioritises economic ties over military aid:

Vice President JD Vance later emphasised that economic agreements, such as the minerals deal, were a stronger deterrent against Russia than a proposed international peacekeeping force. He said that the minerals deal is better than demanding a security guarantee. The Trump administration believes securing Ukraine’s mineral resources will deter Russian aggression more effectively than foreign military deployments.

Uncertainty over the minerals deal:

The minerals deal was expected to be finalised during Zelenskyy’s White House visit. However, after the tense Oval Office meeting, the plan was abruptly shelved. For Ukraine, the deal was a way to repay the US for military aid. However, the future of the minerals deal is still uncertain.
