On Thursday 16th of January 2025, officials informed that severe volcanic outbursts in eastern Indonesia have forced hundreds of islands to leave, and thousands more are waiting for their turn.

On Wednesday 15th of January, “Mount Ibu”, which is situated in North Maluku province on the isolated island of Halmahera, erupted, launching a column of cloud up to {(4) kilometers (2.5 miles)} into the sky.

Indonesia’s Geological Agency quickly lifted the volcano’s warning level to the greatest level, causing local officials to order the center for evacuation of (3,000) close residents.

People Left Their Homes

In addition (517) people of the community nearest the volcano had left their homes as of Thursday morning, and the remaining residents were expected to be relocated later that day.

According to Irfan Idrus, an official for the local crisis management agency, “the refugee camps have been set up by the local administration, and an accurate departure will be performed for everyone living in (6) villages today.”

He also mentioned that evacuations started at {6:00 p.m. (1100 GMT)} on Wednesday but were postponed because of logistical and administrative problems.

“The process was further complicated by the rain that has been falling,” he further added. As vehicles were ready for evacuation, locals continued to go about their everyday lives in their communities, an AFP correspondent reported.

Rista Tuyu, a (32-year-old) local, stated, “There is definitely some anxiety and worry, but we have grown used to the eruptions here. Eruptions could occur (3 or 4) times in a week, but this week was the biggest,” she claimed.

She also expressed her hope that the volcano would soon subside so that the villagers could get back to their regular routines.

Following a string of earthquakes in June of last year, “Mount Ibu” has demonstrated a marked rise in volcanic activity.

The volcano, one of Indonesia’s largest, erupted (9) times in the 1st few weeks of January alone. Tourists and locals living close to “Mount Ibu” have been warned to use “face masks” in case of falling ash and to stay away from the (5 to 6) kilometer exclusion zone surrounding the volcano’s top.

According to official data, there were about (700,000) people living on Halmahera island as of the year 2022. “Mount Ruang” in North Sulawesi province erupted over half a “dozen times” this past year, causing thousands of people from nearby islands to leave their homes.

“Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki”, a {1,703-meter (5,587-foot)} “twin peaked” volcano on the tourist island of Flores, exploded over a dozen times in a single week last November, died (9) people in its initial explosion.
