General Brown was removed before term completion:

Donald Trump made major changes in the top order of US Generals. On his Truth Social account, he posted that he is going to nominate former Lieutenant General Dan Razin Caine to replace Brown. Trump’s stance on replacing the active General with the former retired General would be the first-ever stance made in the history of the US. It is the first time that the US president nominated the retired General to the position of top military officer.

General Charles Brown, the second Black officer to serve as the president’s top uniformed military adviser, was removed from his position before completing his term. He had been expected to serve until September 2027. A US official confirmed that Brown’s removal was immediate, pending the Senate’s confirmation of his successor.

In November, Reuters first reported that the incoming Trump administration planned to restructure the top military leadership, including firing General Brown.

Political reactions to Brown’s dismissal:

Lawmakers opposed Trump’s decision to fire top generals. They argued that changing the top order based on political loyalty could damage trust within the armed forces. Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island warned that such actions could undermine military professionalism. Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts criticized the decision as “un-American and dangerous.” He added, “This is the definition of politicizing our military.”

Trump’s stance on ‘Woke’ Generals:

During his campaign, Trump often spoke about removing “woke” generals. He also targeted military leaders linked to the controversial 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. However, on Friday, Trump did not explain why he replaced Brown.

Trump acknowledged Brown’s service in a statement, saying, “I want to thank General Charles ‘CQ’ Brown for his over 40 years of service to our country. He is a fine gentleman and an outstanding leader.”

Defense secretary’s view on Brown’s leadership:

Newly appointed Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had expressed skepticism about Brown before taking office. Hegseth, who aims to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the military, questioned Brown’s appointment.

In his 2024 book The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free, Hegseth raised doubts about Brown’s selection. He wrote, “Was it because of his skin color? Or his skill? We’ll never know, but we always doubt.”

Brown’s experience and discrimination claims:

Brown, a former fighter pilot, has held leadership roles in the Middle East and Asia. In a video posted online after George Floyd’s killing in 2020, he spoke emotionally about experiencing discrimination in the military.

At the time of his dismissal, Brown was traveling on official duty. Just hours before Trump’s announcement, his official social media account shared photos of him meeting troops at the U.S.-Mexico border. His post emphasized border security as a critical part of national defense. Brown’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

Women leaders also dismissed:

Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to lead the U.S. Navy, was also fired. Her appointment by former President Joe Biden in 2023 had been unexpected. Many officials had anticipated Admiral Samuel Paparo’s nomination instead. While Franchetti lost her role, Paparo was promoted to lead the Indo-Pacific Command. Trump also dismissed Admiral Linda Fagan, the first woman to command the U.S. Coast Guard. Her removal occurred on Trump’s first day in office.

Retired General Mark Milley targeted:

The Trump administration also took action against retired Army General Mark Milley. Milley, a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had openly criticized Trump after leaving office. In response, the Pentagon revoked his security clearance and removed his portrait from its walls.
