According to the Press release from the PM office, Shehbaz Sharif met Trump for the first time at White House. In the meeting, both leaders discussed counter-terrorism, security issues, and economic growth.

A historic first encounter:

On Friday morning, Trump met Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting counts as the first-ever meeting in history to foster Pak-US ties. As per the PM office, the meeting revolved around regional security, counterterrorism, and strengthening bilateral cooperation. Shehbaz was accompanied by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, while Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined Trump.

Focus on security and peace:

Shehbaz thanked Trump for publicly acknowledging Pakistan’s efforts in countering terrorist attacks in the region. He also stressed the need to enhance cooperation in security and intelligence further.

Shehbaz also praised Trump and called him “a man of peace.” He also acknowledged Trump’s role in lessening global conflicts and appreciated his mediation role in the May ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He said Trump’s intervention helped avert a major catastrophe in South Asia.

Strengthening ties and economic cooperation:

Shehbaz also invited Trump to visit Pakistan. The press release from the PM office confirmed, “The Prime Minister also extended a warm and cordial invitation to President Trump to undertake an official visit to Pakistan, at his convenience.”

Shehbaz particularly acknowledged Trump’s initiative to end the war in Gaza and his engagement with Muslim leaders in New York for peace in the region.

On the economic front, the PM thanked Trump for the new tariff agreement and encouraged American companies to invest in Pakistan’s agriculture, IT, minerals, and energy sectors. He expressed hope that “under President Trump’s leadership, the Pakistan-US partnership would be further strengthened to the mutual benefit of both countries.”

A shift in US-Pakistan dynamics:

According to a senior US official, Pakistan-US relations are “gradually warming up” under Trump’s second term. The official stressed that Washington maintains an “independent relationship with Pakistan,” not tied to India.

He said, Recent US investments in Pakistan’s mineral and petroleum sectors highlight this shift. “We’re working through a number of issues when it comes to counterterrorism, when it comes to economic and trade ties.”

Meanwhile, US-India ties have faced strains over visa hurdles, tariffs, and disagreements on trade. Analysts note that New Delhi is recalibrating its relations with China, while Islamabad has openly supported Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for defusing tensions in South Asia.

Strengthening regional partnerships:

Beyond the Oval Office, PM Shehbaz also met Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s chief adviser. Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to “constructive and forward-looking ties” with Dhaka. Both leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in trade, regional connectivity, and cultural exchanges.

Yunus praised Pakistan’s willingness to deepen engagement and stressed the importance of stronger bilateral trade and people-to-people connections.
