In the Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, after a video showing a woman giving a man the facial service went viral on social media, there has been a strong reaction from the residents of the area. District Police Officer (DPO) Dr. Zahidullah Khan said that he had received public complaints that ‘regular massages were being conducted in the salon,’ prompting the police to act.

Swat is considered a conservative region of Pakistan where the Taliban has had significant influence in the past, and restrictions on girls’ education have also been seen. In a video that has gone viral on social media, it can be seen that a woman in a pink dress is giving a facial to a young man while other women and men dressed in pant shirts are also there. There is a glass installed at the entrance of this salon from where people can be seen coming and going on the street, but no one from outside can see inside. After the viral video, the police closed the salon and arrested its two owners.

DPO Dr. Zahidullah Khan says that after the video went viral on social media, the police immediately registered a case and arrested the two salon owners. He says the salon owner has assured the police that ‘women will not provide services in future salons.‘ According to the police, the women working in the salon have been sent back to their areas and released to find the owners. This salon, located in the Rahimabad area of Swat, has now reopened after being closed for a day. Police say that six women and seven men were working in this salon.

Local people say that after the video of the young man’s facial went viral on social media, there were rumors that people would come out of the house after Iftar and close the salon. A young boy from Swat is very active on YouTube and Facebook, and he uploaded this video to social media after getting his facial done. He says that other pages on Facebook also uploaded this video, and within a few moments, it went viral. Before people took to the streets to protest, the police took action. They closed down the salon, which eased the anger of the locals and did not cause any major law and order problems.

People reacted strongly to the Facebook pages in social media and wrote that it is necessary to prevent this work; otherwise, the young generation may become victims of misguidance. Abid Ali Jan, a social activist working in Swat, says that the reaction to the video was so intense that even the district mayor, Shahid Ali, had to be mobilized, after which the police closed down the salon and detained two people.
