In just 24 hours Two Polio Cases Reported in location of Dera Bugti and Chaman
Pakistan is fighting a fresh war against the harmful poliovirus, as Balochistan sees an
alarming increase of cases.
“The virus targets youngsters who suffer from hunger and have weakened immunity
due to incorrectly or non-vaccination against polio and other childhood infections.”
The story emerged a day after a 30-month-old kid was reported paralyzed in Dera Bugti. The
infant experienced paralysis in both lower limbs, and the particular virus comes from the
imported YB3A cluster.
On March 14, polio returned to Dera Bugti, breaking a 13-year inactivity with an
examination of a two-and-a-half-year-old kid. The signs of fever and weakness raised
worries, requiring complete medical exams on the 22nd of February.
The affected youngster fell unconscious unexpectedly on February 29, demanding
emergency treatment. Later hospital examinations showed the horrible facts of polio
infection, highlighting the virus’s determined spreading even inside local populations.
Throughout 24 hours, the National Institute of Health (NIH) verified another case of polio,
with the newest victim, a four-and-a-half-year-old kid from the Chaman district of
Balochistan, suffering from the poliovirus’s crippling effects.
The resulting identification of poliovirus type 1 pushed health officials into a fight against
time to avoid its growth in the region. The identified virus is part of the imported YB3A
cluster, which has been discovered in ten positive samples from Chaman since October 2023.
In addition to these worrying phenomena, health officials have launched strong
vaccination programs and increased monitoring procedures to deal with the poliovirus’s
ongoing progress.
Fortunately, polio’s rare occurrences highlight Pakistan’s ongoing problems, especially
among places with not enough access to important healthcare services.
According to an NIH lab official, poliovirus is in societies and remains a long-term problem
to children across the country, having been discovered in 56 samples of the environment
from more than 25 districts this year and more than 100 samples of wastewater the previous year.
The health department asked parents, relatives, religious leaders, teachers, and
community members to help fight the disease by making sure all children under the age of
five participate in vaccination efforts.
Since the beginning of 2024, the national polio programmed has launched two vaccination
campaigns with the goal of 45 million children.
In accordance with the latest cases, a new polio campaign will start on March 25 in regions
where the virus has been discovered. The campaign will target almost six million youngsters.
