PAKISTAN: On Monday, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Faisalabad sentenced 10 years of imprisonment to 59 PTI leaders and supporters and released 34 other leaders for attacking Rana Sanaullah’s house during the May 9 riots.

Punishments in the May 9 cases:

In 2023, the PTI protest caused severe damage to the country’s sovereignty. Many of the PTI leaders and supporters got arrested at that time. The legal team head of the PTI confirmed that the sixteen leaders of the PTI were sentenced to three years of imprisonment.

Under Article 63 (1) (g) of the Constitution, any parliamentarian who is found guilty of committing illegal activities or a part of any crime would be automatically disqualified. That is why the PTI parliamentarians involved in the May 9 riots are automatically disqualified.

The deadline to give the verdict in the May 9 cases has already passed. In July 2024, an ATC summoned a joint investigation team to submit the charge sheet. In today’s decision, more than 100 PTI workers are sentenced to severe crimes.

Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Zartaj Gul and Sunni Ittehad Council chief Hamid Raza are among these leaders who were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. In a case where 67 accused are presented. Out of these 67, 60 got punishment, while 7 were released. In other cases, out of 108 accused, 107 were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, and one got three years of imprisonment. Though 77 were freed.
