Authorities in Bahrain banned the fishing, trading, and selling of shrimp in its territorial seas for a period of 6-months.

The Marine Wealth Directorate of the Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE) has declared a 6-month ban on the fishing, trading, and selling of prawns in Bahraini territorial waters, which will run from the (1st of February to 31st of July).

Through the protection of fish populations and Bahrain’s marine resources, the ban supports national efforts to ensure the industry’s life expectancy.

According to the marine wealth directorate, the decision is a component of broader initiatives to safeguard the maritime environment and promote the preservation of natural resources. All shrimp fishing methods are prohibited in certain areas to support the survival of the stock, and the sale of shrimp in marketplaces will also be prohibited at this time.

In accordance with Decree-20 of 2002 on regulating and protecting maritime treasures, the Coast Guard will keep coordinating inspection operations to enforce the restriction, and offenders will be subject to fines.

While the directorate also stressed that any shrimp accidentally caught during a ban must be gently returned to the water to ensure their survival.
