After receiving a corneal transplant from the wife of a retired senior commander in the Pakistan Army, two visually impaired troops were able to see again.

Following her death on October 3rd, 2025, Major General (retd) Syed Zafar Mehdi Askari’s wife, Wasima Askari, donated corneal tissue for the transplant. The Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology (AFIO) in Rawalpindi is where the procedure was performed.

In addition “Ali, 30, and Falak Sher, 26”, were soldiers who had been injured during anti-terrorism operations and had lost their sight. At AFIO, talented surgeons safely transplanted corneal tissue into patients eyes.

This is Pakistan’s initial successful corneal transplant with a local woman’s contribution, making it a historic accomplishment. The soldiers’ vision has been restored as a result of the operation, signifying the late Wasima Askari’s tremendous sacrifice and contribution.

The success of this transplant is a significant milestone in the history of AFIO, a specialist facility for the recovery of soldiers injured in the nation’s defense.

“The biggest pleasure is knowing that my mother’s eyes were given away to two brave soldiers, restoring light back into their lives,” said Zahra Mehdi, the late Mrs. Askari’s daughter, who was incredibly proud of her mother’s sacrifice. This act of kindness is an example of continuous giving to others (sadaqah jariyah).
