In what seems to be one of the most significant jailbreaks in recent memory, hundreds of prisoners reportedly broke out of Malir Jail in Karachi, causing a significant security breach. Inmates were temporarily relocated from their barracks for safety concerns after Monday’s earthquake shocks that shook Karachi, according to jail officials, who also noted that inmates were able to escape during this time. Due to the jailbreak, there was a large-scale police operation and a lot of gunshots nearby.

According to sources, the recent activity related to earthquakes that rocked Karachi may have played a role in the jail’s structural damage. According to reports, (11) tremors with a magnitude of (2.4) were recorded in the last (24 to 48 hours), indicating that the wall had been severely weakened.

Injured Moved To Hospital

At (11:16 PM), the most recent tremor happened. Rescue officials said that (3) FC personnel suffered significant injuries in the resulting turmoil and panic after the escape. Although several others had minor injuries, they were taken to a private hospital for urgent treatment.

About (6,000) prisoners were being held at Malir Jail at the time of the search, according to Hassan Sahito, DIG Prisons, who verified the occurrence.

“Panic spread among the prisoners after the tremors this morning, and some even broke locks trying to escape,” he told reporters.

He went on to say that inmates with a history of drug addiction were the main ones that attempted escape from (2 to 3) locations within the institution.

Agencies Started Their Work

A large-scale effort was quickly started by law enforcement agencies. Both National Highway tracks were closed as part of the search.

Rangers worked with the police in searching the neighborhoods of “Gaddafi Town, Shah Latif Town, and Bhains Colony”, which are all close to the jail. While (73) prisoners have been arrested thus far. Additionally, residents helped by reporting questionable people.

Lanjar Zia Zia Lanjar, the interior minister for Sindh, recognized the incident but stated that it is yet unknown if the prisoners broke the wall or only the locks to get out.

Forces start Search Operation

According to first reports, the tremors caused the inmates to be relocated from their barracks, he said. He confirmed that responsibility will be decided after a thorough examination.

The ongoing operations in the nearby rural areas include elite forces including the Special Response Force (SRF) and Special Security Unit (SSU).

Officials at the jail have started classifying hiding inmates and counting detainees. Whereas “police, FC, and other troops” have secured the interior, Rangers have taken over outside Malir Jail.

Officials said that all of the remaining prisoners are now under control after a thorough search of the jail’s grounds. While making sure the prison is structurally secure following the seismic disturbances, authorities are still figuring out the characteristics of the escaped inmates.
