On Monday, Trump was asked about the military aid to Ukraine. Upon which he refused to rule out a pause in military assistance. However, any delay in US arms shipments could significantly weaken Ukraine’s ability to resist Russia’s invasion.
White House confirms aid suspension:
A White House official confirmed that Trump wants peace by hook or by crook. The official also mentioned that Washington is reviewing its aid strategy. They said, “We are pausing and reviewing our assistance to ensure it is contributing to a solution.”
Trump demands gratitude from Ukraine:
Trump criticized Zelensky. He said that Zelensky should avoid making troublesome statements. He, however, said that the Ukrainian president should support the US and cooperate in making a peaceful ceasefire deal. His comments have raised concerns about the future of US-Ukraine relations.
Aid freeze takes immediate effect:
The aid suspension has already begun. According to the New York Times, the pause affects hundreds of millions of dollars in military assistance. It includes weapons that were in the process of being sent to Ukraine. Zelensky stated that he wants the war to end “as soon as possible.” However, he accused Russia of not being serious about peace negotiations.
Zelensky’s key demand:
Zelensky insists that strong security guarantees are necessary to end the war. He pointed out that Ukraine had agreed to give up its nuclear weapons in 1994. In return, the United States and Britain had pledged protection. However, Zelensky argues that the lack of security guarantees enabled Russian aggression. He said, “The absence of guarantees allowed Russia to occupy Crimea. It later launched a full-scale invasion.”
Europe reacts to Trump’s move:
Zelensky acknowledged that discussions are still in the early stages. He described an agreement to end the war as “very, very far away.” His remarks reportedly angered Trump, who is pushing for a quicker resolution. Zelensky also stressed that only a “real, honest peace” would be acceptable. He emphasised that Ukraine would not accept a deal that does not include security assurances. Russia dismissed Zelensky’s comments.
Trump labels Zelensky a “Dictator”:
Trump has previously attacked Zelensky’s leadership. He has even called him a “dictator” for not holding elections during the war. Zelensky dismissed calls for his resignation. He reiterated that he would step down only if Ukraine received NATO membership. Both Russia and the US oppose Ukraine’s NATO membership.
European leaders express concern:
Germany’s likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, condemned Trump’s remarks. He described the confrontation as a “deliberate escalation” by the US president. Merz also warned that Trump’s policies could weaken Western unity. Many European nations fear that a US-Russia deal could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.
