Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said to resign his position only if Ukraine is part of NATO

Seeking security guarantees from the US:

Zelensky stressed the need for security guarantees from the United States. He hopes to gain strong commitments from Washington before any peace deal is finalised. Zelensky also wants to meet Donald Trump before Trump meets Russian President Vladimir Putin. He believes that discussing Ukraine’s security with Trump first is crucial for his country’s future.

US-Ukraine trade talks progress:

Beyond security concerns, the US and Ukraine also discuss economic agreements. Zelensky, however, offered a deal to access Ukraine’s critical resources. The deal is not clear, but it could impact Ukraine’s economic future. The US wants to push for a peace deal, but it is unclear if its efforts will bring Moscow and Kyiv closer to an agreement.

Russia rejects territorial concessions:

The Kremlin has refused to hand over its territory to Ukraine. The president’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, also rejected any territorial concessions. Russia dismissed Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and remains adamant that Ukraine must stay out of the alliance.

UN calls for a peace deal:

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, called for a peace deal and stressed the importance of Ukraine’s independence. However, the UN passed a resolution that did not mention Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The proposed resolution asks to stop the war without mentioning the procedure for doing so.

Russia escalates attacks on Ukraine:

On the battlefield, Russia has intensified its attacks. Moscow’s military launched a record 267 drones at Ukraine overnight. Kyiv’s air force reported that it intercepted almost all of them. Despite the massive assault, there were no reports of major damage.

Trump-Zelensky tensions benefit Russia:

Moscow has not ignored the growing tension between Trump and Zelensky. Its leadership has openly commented on the dispute. Peskov criticised Zelensky for making what he called “inappropriate remarks” toward Trump. Moscow has used the tensions to portray Ukraine as weak and desperate for Western support.
