On Monday 8th of July 2024, in an effort to strengthen their relations in the face of China’s feared danger, the Philippines and Japan signed a significant defense agreement that permits the placement of troops on their respective territory. According to details, in Manila, where Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara and Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa are meeting with their Philippine counterparts, Gilberto Teodoro and Enrique Manalo, the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) was finalized.

On the other side,Tokyo and Manila began talking about the agreement in November, and it gives Japan and the Philippines the legal right to send defense troops to each other’s countries for operations, training, and other purposes. Cheloy Garafil, the presidential communications secretary, informed the news agency that Teodoro and Kamikawa confirmed the deal at the presidential palace. Longtime friends of the United States of America, which has been tightening its relationships from Canberra to Tokyo to keep off China’s expanding presence in the area, are Japan and the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have charged that the US is attempting to establish a NATO for the Asia-Pacific region. Beijing and Tokyo are at odds over disputes over islands in the East China Sea that Japan claims.
