Pakistan poised to secure eighth term in UNSC

On Thursday, June 6th, 2024, Pakistan is in a strong position to become the 8th temporary member of the UNSC, setting a new record. Elections for temporary seats are also being considered for (Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia). Each of the 5 competitors has held the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) seat 7- times for Pakistan, 5 times for Panama, 4 times for Denmark, 2 times for Greece, and 1- time for Somalia. According to the details, 1 seat for the (African) group, one seat for the (Asia-Pacific) group, one seat for the (Latin American) group as well as (the Caribbean) group, plus the (Western European) group has 2 seats for the 5 seats up for take in this election. Pakistan, referring to the Asia-Pacific area alongside India, is a strong candidate for one of the open seats.

The polls are only for the 10 temporary posts; the UN Security Council’s 5 permanent members (Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States of America) do not participate. Each of the 5 newly elected members chosen this year is going to take their seats on January 1st, 2025, and stay until December 31st, 2026. The entire world will be more tense when the newly appointed Security Council members assume office as a result of issues like Russia’s takeover of Ukraine and the continuing war in Palestine. However, the Security Council has been divided as a result of these geopolitical points of conflict, with key nations holding opposing views on many different kinds of matters, from how to deal with humanitarian crises to weapons and security concerns.
