World Press Freedom Day 2024 | Is journalist free in Pakistan?
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3, mainly to celebrate the freedom of expression that any journalist can report based on evidence against the government or any institution. You see, journalists are not free all over the world; the news is controlled in big countries like America, and journalists are prevented from writing the truth. Many people agree that journalism is a prophetic profession because a journalist conveys a message to the people. If we talk in the context of Pakistan, here, the journalist is not free at all; here, journalism is used only for their interest. If a journalist speaks the truth and stands against the government, he is harmed in various ways, even imprisoned. In the recent past, we have seen several instances where journalists were detained in Pakistan.
Media is the fourth pillar of the state, so it is very important to strengthen this pillar. A free press is considered the secret of the development of any country. Because only the journalist has the power to write and speak against the policies of the government. The basic principle of journalism is to represent the people. A good journalist speaks to the public all the time. Free journalism is the guarantee of the country’s development. In the past, there were many examples in Pakistan when a journalist was killed just because he stood up against falsehood and spoke about the truth.

In the World Press Freedom Index, Pakistan ranks 150 out of 180 countries in the world, which is a very bad situation. In Pakistan, journalists are not considered free at all. The country’s intelligence agencies always seem to interfere with the media. This is the reason why Pakistan’s global ranking is so bad. As long as journalism is not free, the country will not develop. And the positive image of Pakistan will not be highlighted at the international level. Journalism is not a job but a responsibility. So, the purpose of celebrating this day on May 3 is to make all the journalists and governments of the world believe that a free press is a sign of free countries.
