How will the US $61 billion in military aid benefit Ukraine against Russia?
US President Joe Biden has signed a $95 billion package to provide military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Earlier, the US Senate approved a vital bill to provide military assistance to these three countries. After signing this package, the American president said, ‘ this (package) will make America safe, it will make the world safe.’ After signing this bill, Ukraine will receive $61 billion in military aid from the United States. US President Joe Biden says the US will ‘immediately’ send weapons and military equipment to Ukraine to stop Russian advances. Currently, Ukraine needs air defence systems, missiles and artillery shells. For Ukraine to secure its cities and infrastructure projects, including energy plants, it is essential to thwart Russian airstrikes.

Last week, the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, said that Russia had attacked his country with 1,200 missiles, 1,500 drones and 8,500 guided bombs the previous year. Ukraine currently has a variety of weapons, ranging from short-range Stinger missiles to the more expensive Patriot missile systems. According to President Zelensky, Ukraine currently needs seven more Patriot missile systems. Russia has cruise and ballistic missiles, including the S-300 and S-400, and hundreds of Iranian-made drones, which are proving difficult for Ukraine to intercept. The traditional method of confusing an air defence system is to fire many missiles and drones at it, making it difficult for them to intercept airstrikes.
The war in the air and on the ground is significant for Ukraine. Since October last year, Russia has seized about 583 km of land in the eastern regions of Ukraine, and this is because Ukraine lacks artillery weapons. During this conflict, the ‘High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems’ have greatly helped the Ukrainian battlefield. These systems are installed on mobile platforms or large vehicles. The beauty of ‘High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems’ is that they can be installed at a specific location, fired and moved before the Russian military can react. An important thing here is that the ‘army tactical missile systems’ of the United States are also among the weapons to be sent to Ukraine. Older “Army Tactical Missile Systems” have been in Ukraine since last year. Still, the new version extends the missile’s range to 300 kilometres, which would help the missiles reach Crimea, where Russia has made a significant naval base.
