PCB Re-appointed Baber Azam as Pakistan’s Captain in ODI and T20 formats
Babar Azam, Pakistan’s ODI and T20 cricket captain, has been re-appointed ahead of the next home T20I series against New Zealand, only just months before the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Men’s T20 World in 2024. Depending on reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) turned to X (previously Twitter) to announce that “after accepting suggestion from the PCB’s (Pakistan Cricket Board) selection committee, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi has selected Babar Azam as a (white-ball) ODI and T20I captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team.” The PCB confirmed the news on social networking sites, verifying Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s selection to choose Babar as the ODI and T20 captain.

Previously, ESPN Cricinfo stated that Babar Azam has suggested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) name him captain of the men’s national team in all three forms. According to the report, 29-year-old Baber Azam recently asked the PCB to name him Skipper of all three formats if he considers returning. After completing the ICC World Cup 2023, Babar was replaced as captain in all formats, with Shaheen taking over in the T20 format and Shan Masood becoming Test captain, although no skipper for ODIs was confirmed.

After Babar’s reappointment, his initial task as captain will be to lead Pakistan in the forthcoming five-match T20I series vs New Zealand at home, beginning on April 18. Pakistan is in Group A of the T20 World Cup and will face India, Ireland, Canada, and the United States. Babar Azam has led Pakistan in 5 international tournaments: the T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022, the Asia Cup 2022 and 2023, and the World Cup 2023. Under his captaincy, the men in green shirts have achieved neither ICC nor Asia Cup championships.
